- Hohai University -
Hohai University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, with a history of 110 years, characterized by its emphasis on hydraulic engineering, a primary focus on engineering disciplines, and a coordinated development across multiple disciplines. It is a key institution in the national "Double First Class" initiative, the "211 Project," the "985 Project Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform," and has been approved by the state to establish a graduate school. Over the past century, the university has grown significantly in its efforts to contribute to national water management, earning the reputation as the "cradle of high-level innovative and entrepreneurial talent in hydraulic engineering and an important base for hydraulic technology innovation." The university has campuses located in Nanjing and Changzhou, including the Xikang Road campus, Jiangning campus, and Changzhou campus.
Hohai University originated from the Hohai Engineering Specialized School founded in 1915 by the renowned patriotic industrialist and educator Zhang Jian. It was the first higher education institution in China dedicated to cultivating talents in hydraulic engineering, pioneering higher education in this field in the country. Proletarian revolutionaries such as Zhang Wentian and Shen Zemin studied at Hohai and subsequently embarked on revolutionary paths. In 1924, it merged with the engineering school of Southeast University to form Hohai Engineering University, and in 1927 it became part of the Civil Engineering Department of Sun Yat-sen University (later undergoing several name changes, including the Civil Engineering Department of Jiangsu University, the Hydraulic Group of the Engineering College of Central University, and the Hydraulic Department of Nanjing University). In 1952, the Hydraulic Department of Nanjing University, along with the hydraulic departments of other universities such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, and Zhejiang University, and the East China Water Conservancy Technical School, formed the East China Water Conservancy College, headed by the first president Qian Zhengying. In 1960, the university was recognized as a national key university by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 1985, it restored its traditional name "Hohai University," which was inscribed by Comrade Deng Xiaoping.
The university has established numerous departments, including the School of Hydrology and Water Resources, the School of Hydraulic Engineering, the School of Port, Coastal and Offshore Engineering, the School of Civil and Transportation Engineering, the School of Environmental Science, the School of Electrical and Power Engineering, the School of Computer and Software Engineering, the School of Mechanics and Engineering Science, the School of Earth Science and Engineering, the School of Agricultural Science and Engineering, the School of Soil and Water Conservation, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the School of Information Science and Engineering, the School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation, the School of New Energy, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, the School of Oceanography, the School of Geography and Remote Sensing, the School of Mathematics, the School of Business, the School of Economics and Finance, the School of Public Administration, the School of Emergency Management and Safety Engineering, the Law School, the Marxism College, the School of Foreign Languages, the Department of Physical Education, the Dayu College, the College of Future Technologies, the School of Excellence in Engineering, and the Hohai Leel College. Currently, there are 55,292 students enrolled in various degree programs, including 19,171 graduate students, 22,024 undergraduate students, and 1,359 international students. The university has 3,579 staff members, including 2,229 full-time teachers, with 1,476 holding senior positions. It currently has 5 academicians (including 3 foreign academicians), 123 national-level high-level talents, and over 700 participants in provincial and ministerial talent cultivation programs.
